Periodontal Treatment

Being the most common cause of adult tooth loss in the UK, many of you will know the second most important thing Gary checks for is the condition of your gums and periodontium. Your gums should be firm and pink with an orange peel stippling texture. 

Poor gum health however can lead to symptoms such as gum recession, bleeding on brushing, bad breath, tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss.

On your consultation Gary will carry out a risk assessment for your periodontium and will provide a periodontal treatment and maintenance plan. Depending on the condition of your gums and bone a simple scale and polish, now known as Professional Mechanical Plaque Removal (PMPR) is not enough and you may require deeper cleaning sessions known as Root Surface Debridement (RSD) which should be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis as regulated by the British Society of Periodontology Guidelines 2017.

Working closely with the practice’s hygienist services we will ensure that your periodontal health is maintained. You will learn the importance of good oral hygiene and receive advice on cleaning techniques bespoke to your specific problem areas (tooth brushing, floss, and use of TePe brushes).

It is important to note that if you have gum disease, we cannot reverse the damage caused but only stop it from progressing and getting worse. It is important that you realise that home care and a good daily oral hygiene routine is the crux of its maintenance, supplemented by regular visits to the surgery.
