Biomimetic Composite And Porcelain Restorations
Also known as tooth coloured or ‘white fillings’ we can use a composite resin or porcelain restorations which are bonded to your cavities to replaced missing tooth structure which has been lost to decay or fracture.
The use of composite and porcelain is the crux of restorative dental care and is much more than just filling a hole. Using biomimetic materials; those which not only look like the dentine and enamel we are trying to restore but also have the physical properties including compressive strength and wear resistance of both.
Using rubber dam isolation techniques, the teeth are prepared, and restorations are placed in a sterile environment throughout the procedure and is considered gold standard. The rubber dam is a non-latex rubber sheet (often coloured blue) which keep the teeth and the cavities dry and free of saliva whilst the composite is being bonded and layered and prevents the ingestion of old amalgam mercury containing restorations.
In some cases, Gary may advise the use of a porcelain onlays/inlays/overlays to restore your cavities instead of a composite restoration. This tends to be in cases where there is severe tooth damage and limited tooth structure remaining. Their procedure often contains the same steps as placing a composite resin restoration. Porcelain restorations can be produced via in-house CADCAM Cerec technology in a single visit, or remotely by the dental laboratory.
